Multiple factors are shaping the National Rally’s cautious approach towards Trump and his MAGA movement, analysts say: From the French party’s traditional, if fading, distrust of a ‘hegemonic’ United States, to the negative impact on France of US tariffs, to strong antipathy towards Trump on the part of many French voters.

“Overall they are relatively ideologically aligned with Trump, and they’ve been positive about his re-election,” said Camille Lons, deputy Paris Office head of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) of the National Rally. “But they’re much more careful than a number of other populist leaders in Europe. There is more distance in the relationship than in Germany, or Italy for example.”

    Trump’s shadow extends across Europe

In Germany, some observers believe that strong backing by Trump allies, like Vice President JD Vance and Elon Musk, helped to catapult the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party to second place in the February elections. In Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s warm relations with the US leader have lifted her standing within the European Union, which sees her as a potential bridge to smoothing ties with Washington.

The Trump administration’s influence is also discernable elsewhere in Europe, including in Hungary and in Poland, both of which hosted the US-founded Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this year — a first for Warsaw, where the Trump-endorsed candidate Karol Nawrocki won June’s presidential elections.

“From the American side, these parties are seen as potential instruments to influence European politics,” said German Marshall Fund program officer Zsuzsanna Vegh. “The fact they’re euroskeptic and challenge the European Union plays into the hands of the [Trump] administration.”

    Seeking votes

But the US leader’s brand carries risks for the National Rally, analysts say, even though France’s leading opposition party shares his nationalistic, anti-immigration views. A June ECFR poll showed 55% of French saw Trump’s policies as not only harmful for their own country, but half also believed they harmed the United States. Among National Rally voters, only 37% considered Trump’s policies good for US citizens; just 18% thought they were good for French ones.

“The National Rally is pursuing a strategy of vote maximalization,” ahead of the 2027 elections, said Vegh. “It needs to appear as a party that is moderate enough to be able to draw voters from the mainstream — and not alienate its own electorate, which is also quite skeptical of Trump’s impact on France.”

Trump’s threat of massivetariffs on EU imports — potentially hitting French industry and agriculture — offers one example of the negative fallout, Vegh said. The National Rally “can’t really risk appearing to be on overly friendly terms with a leader who might harm the interests of their core, blue-collar electorate.”

For National Rally leader and three-time presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, the Trump administration poses a delicate balancing act in other ways. Since inheriting the party from her father in 2011, Le Pen has spent years broadening and diversifying its base, reaching out to gay, Jewish, younger and more center-right voters — even as the National Rally’s anti-immigrant, populist core remained intact. Her party emerged in first place in last year’s European Parliament and French National Assembly elections, although it failed to capture a majority.

Unlike other European far-right figures, Le Pen was not invited to Trump’s inauguration. Earlier this year, her 29-year-old protege and National Rally president, Jordan Bardella, tangled with MAGA heavyweight Steve Bannon — cancelling a CPAC speech after Bannon appeared to make a Nazi salute. Bardella’s move earned a sharp rebuke from Bannon.

“That’s a good example of the risk of being associated with Trump and his entourage,” said the ECFR’s Lons, “at a moment when the RN has been working so hard in trying to normalize its image and appear like a party that is able to govern.”

Bardella is poised to take Le Pen’s place as presidential candidate if she loses her appealImage: Thomas Padilla/AP/picture alliance/dpa

    Mixed views on Trump

But when Le Pen was convicted of graft in March over a fake jobs scandal involving European Parliament hires — potentially sinking her presidential bid — Trump slammed the judicial decision as a “witch hunt.” More recently, a Trump State Department appointee offered to bankroll Le Pen’s appeal with US government funds, according to Politico and Reuters — an overture that was reportedly rebuffed. (Bardella is poised to take Le Pen’s place as presidential candidate if she loses her appeal.)

On a recent, party-organized visit to France’s opulent Senate one sweltering afternoon, National Rally supporters offered a mixed take on the US leader and his impact. Former flight attendant Jacques Le Roy said he hoped his party would replicate Trump’s signature measures: From tariffs and immigration crackdowns, to massive government layoffs which Le Roy described as “degreasing the system.”

Citește mai multe știri pe top10stiri.ro

He had a thumbs-up, too, for diluting the powers of the European Union, which the US leader has described as born to “screw” the US. “We agree with a lot of Trump’s ideas,”  Le Roy said. “It’s normal we have our differences. But the ideas remain the same.”

But finance student Noe Marguinal, also at the Senate visit, was less enthusiastic.  “France and Europe are extremely tied to the United States, and in my opinion too much,” Marguinal said. “I think it’s better we decide more for ourselves than remain under the subordination of the United States.”

    Transatlantic parallels

For the National Rally’s critics, Trump’s Washington sets an alarming precedent. Both Le Pen and Bardella lead the polls as potential presidential candidates. Analysts and ordinary French residents wonder whether a longtime ‘Republican Front’ of parties, previously blocking the National Rally from winning elections, will finally crumble.

At a recent anti-Trump protest in Paris, many expressed fears of a National Rally victory. “Could it happen here?” asked French musician Clothilde Desjeunes, of the Trump administration’s impact since taking office. “Yes. That’s why we’re out here fighting.”

Another protester, Cathy, with US-French nationality, echoed those concerns. “I’m worried about the National Rally, I’m very worried,” she said, declining to give her last name for fear of reprisal.  “I see a lot of parallels with the United States.”

What happens across the Atlantic could help shape the National Rally’s electoral fortunes, analysts say. If Washington imposes steep tariffs on France, or if Trump’s policies fail spectacularly, the party could feel the aftershocks, said Lons. Optionally, she said, it could be lifted by a surging European far-right alliance that Washington is trying to cultivate.

It’s more likely, she believes, that the party will hedge its bets. “They’ll keep a distance with Trump, so they’re not affected by his controversial positions,” she said, “but they’ll still be reinforced by the overall rise of the far right across Europe.”

One week after a father and his son went missing in Eibsee lake in southern Germany, rescue teams have recovered their bodies, German police reported Saturday.

Investigators believe the 6-year-old boy fell into the lake while the family of four was out on the Eibsee, a Bavarian Alpine lake located at the foot of Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze.

His 33-year-old father jumped in to rescue the child, but neither of them resurfaced, police said, adding that there are no signs of foul play.

The mother and the couple’s daughter were also on the pedal boat at the time. The family is from the southern state of Bavaria, according to the police.

Emergency responders conducted an intensive, week-long search operation to find the pair.

UNESCO puts Bavarian castles on World Heritage List

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Saturday announced the newest additions to its list of designated World Heritage Sites during an annual meeting in Paris.

Several sites in Germany were added to the list, namely, the castles and residences of King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845-1886).

Built in the 1800s in different historicizing styles and defamed as a fanciful if not mad waste of money at the time, the sites have been tourist magnets for nearly 140 years.

The UNESCO designation will no doubt increase the number of people visiting the sites. Some 1.7 million individuals, many of them foreign tourists, visited the castles in 2024.

Politicians in the southern German state of Bavaria have fought for the designation for a quarter century.

Known around the world — in large part due to the Disney corporation’s use of Neuschwanstein as a model for various castles, as well as the image of the palace perched on an outcropping and surrounded by Alpine forests — Neuschwanstein Castle, Herrenchiemsee Palace, Linderhof Castle and the King’s House on Schachen were all added to the list Saturday.

“The inclusion of the palaces on the World Heritage List is an outstanding tribute to these impressive places,” said German Unesco Commission President Maria Böhmer.

“They are all architectural masterpieces and bear witness to the artistic imagination, but also the eccentricity of the fairytale king.”

Prior to Saturday’s additions, there were 54 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany. Globally, there are some 1,223 World Heritage Sites in 168 different countries.

Thyssenkrupp and IG Metall reach labor agreement

ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe and labor union IG Metall announced on Saturday that they have reached agreement over hard fought cost-cutting measures at the German industrial company.

A collective restructuring agreement came Saturday after three days of negotiations, with management and labor seeking to put the company back in the black by 2030.

ThyssenKrupp, Germany’s largest steelmaker, has struggled with rising energy prices and cheap imports from Asia of late.

In order to combat that trend, lay-offs — up to 10,000 of them — and the cancellation of various bonuses will be undertaken, with laborers taking home less pay in the future.

“We are reducing excess capacity, improving efficiency, and can thus achieve a competitive cost structure,” said Marie Jaroni, a member of the company’s executive board, in describing the company’s long-term viability.

Regional IG Metall leader Knut Geisler noted that concessions made by ThyssenKrupp regarding firings and investment had softened the impact of the agreement.

Interior minister says spat over judicial appointments doesn’t weaken Constitutional Court

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt on Saturday said recent parliamentary wrangling within the ruling coalition over the appointment of judges to the Federal Constitutional Court do not weaken the institution.

Dobrindt, of Bavaria’s conservative Christian Social Union (CSU), was reacting to criticism by opposition parties but also from coalition partner Social Democrats (SPD) who accused the CDU/CSU of “deliberately dismantling our highest German court and our democratic institutions.”

Speaking with radio broadcaster Deutschlandfunk (DLF), Dobrindt said, “I don’t see any damage to the Federal Constitutional Court at all.”

Germany’s Bundestag had been scheduled to vote on three appointments to the bench on Friday but the vote was torpedoed when the conservative CDU/CSU bloc unexpectedly withdrew support for a candidate put forth by the SPD over plagiarism accusations.

German comedian Sebastian Hotz will have to go to court in relation to social media posts he made about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

The Berlin public prosecutor’s office charges that Hotz, who is also known as “El Hotzo,” condoned and rewarded criminal offences.

His trial is scheduled to begin on July 23 at the Tiergarten district court in Berlin.

Hotz deleted the posts on X, but screenshots soon began to circulate.

In one comment, he suggested a similarity between a “last bus” and then presidential candidate Trump, writing that “unfortunately” both had been “just missed.” In another, Hotz said: “I think it’s absolutely fantastic when fascists die.”

In the wake of the scandal, regional public broadcaster RBB ended its collaboration with Hotz on a youth program.

Soon after, national public broadcaster ARD Kultur canceled a literary event with him.

Germany denies report it plans to buy more F-35 jets

Germany does not plan to procure more F-35 fighter jets beyond the 35 already ordered, the defense ministry has said, rejecting a Politico report that claimed Berlin aimed to expand its fleet to 50.

Germany has so far ordered 35 US-made jets to replace a total of 85 ageing Tornado aircraft.

“The defense ministry currently has no plans to procure additional F-35s beyond the 35 F-35s already contractually agreed,” a ministry spokesperson said at a regular news conference.

A military source told the Reuters news agency that the 15 additional jets had been part of earlier considerations.

However, NATO’s new targets for weapons and troop numbers mean that the number may need adjusting. The source did not confirm if more jets will ultimately be ordered.

The report by Politico comes amid tensions between Germany and France over their joint FCAS fighter jet project. An industry source told Reuters that France now wants an 80% workshare, which could scrap the agreed split and block the project’s next phase.

Von der Leyen was responding to news about the US having slapped a higher tariff rate, of 30% on EU goods coming into the US, which is higher than the rate US President Donald Trump said would apply in April.

Trump’s 30% tariffs a ‘slap in the face,’ says Top EU trade lawmaker

The chair of the European Parliament’s international trade committee called Trump’s announcement of further tariffs on the EU “a slap in the face.”

“Real willingness to negotiate looks different,” said Bernd Lange, who called for decisive countermeasures.

He called for the first stage of countermeasures to come into force on Monday, followed quickly by the second package.

According to Lange, the bloc must consider the use of anti-coercion instruments, which could, for instance, exclude US firms from public contracts in the EU.

Trump threatens EU with 30% tariff rate — what to know about the timeline until now

Roshni MajumdarFew countries have been able to strike a deal with the US since Donald Trump announced plans for “reciprocal” tariffs in AprilImage: Hu Yousong/Xinhua/picture alliance

US President Donald Trump promised in his inaugural address this year to “tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens.”

By setting new tariff rates, Trump aimed at reducing the country’s trade deficit, which is when the US imports more from a country than it exports to that country, and first announced plans for a “reciprocal” tariff on February 13.

But experts have warned that tariffs could cause chaos for global markets and disrupt the US economy at home.

    The timeline so far

April 2: Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day” when he announces long-promised “reciprocal” tariffs, declaring a 10% baseline tax on imports across the board starting April 5, as well as higher rates for dozens of countries that have a high trade deficit with the US. The calculations for the tariff rates cause widespread confusion.

April 5: Trump’s 10% minimum tariff on nearly all countries and territories takes effect.

April 9: Trump’s higher “reciprocal” rate goes into effect, but his administration says just hours later it is pausing higher rates while maintaining the 10% levy on most global imports.

April 10: EU suspends its steel and aluminium tariff retaliation measures for 90 days — those measures were a response to Trump’s 25% tariffs on imported steel and aluminium that took effect in March.

May 23: Trump threatens a 50% tax on all imports from the EU as well as a 25% tariff on smartphones unless those products are made in America.

Trump says frustrated by lack of progress in talks with EU, writing on Truth Social: “Our discussions with them are going nowhere!”

May 26: Trump says the US will delay implementation of a 50% tariff on goods from the EU from June 1 until July 9 to buy time for negotiations with the bloc.

July 7: Trump signs an executive order to push the deadline for higher tariffs to August 1 and sends his first letters telling 14 countries’ leaders that their exports to the US would face a new tariff rate.

July 8: Trump says he’s not going back on his word and insists that the August 1 deadline is the final one.

July 9: Trump sends more letters, hitting Brazil with a 50% tariff rate. Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva promises to reciprocate.

July 12: Trump announces a 35% tariff on Canadian goods, claiming Canada had “financially retaliated” to earlier duties. He says the EU will receive a similar letter soon.

July 13: Trump announces a 30% tariff rate on the EU and Mexico, telling both that “whatever the number you choose to raise them by, will be added on to the 30% that we charge.”

The EU’s key exports to the US include pharmaceuticals, cars, aircraft, chemicals, medical instruments, and wine and spirits.

French President Macron calls for speedy preparation of ‘countermeasures’

    Emmy Sasipornkarn

French President Emmanuel Macron said his country, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, “shares the same very strong disapproval at the announcement,” which comes “after weeks of intense engagement.”

“With European unity, it is more than ever up to the Commission to assert the Union’s determination to resolutely defend European interests,” Macron posted on X.

The French president added that the bloc would need to speed up “the preparation of credible countermeasures” if no agreement is reached by August 1, when the new tariffs will begin to take effect.

The EU has the ability to enact the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI) which allows it to retaliate against countries seeking to pressure its members. It has been repeatedly brought up as a possible response to Trump’s threats.

It can limit access to companies from those countries to public procurement tenders and target services trade or investment.

At the same time, Macron said he hopes “a mutually acceptable agreement” will be reached by then and that “France fully supports the European Commission in the negotiations, which will now intensify.”

The president of the German Association of the Automotive Industry VDA said in a statement that costs were piling up for car companies and that the “EU and US must continue to find a solution as quickly as possible to avert the impending consequences on both sides of the Atlantic.”

“It is regrettable that there is a threat of further escalation of the trade conflict and that a solution has still not been found for the tariffs of 27.5% on car imports to the USA, which remain in force,” said Hildegard Mueller, president of VDA.

“The costs for our companies are already in the billions — and the sum is growing every day. Suppliers are also significantly affected — also in light of the additional 30% tariffs on goods from Mexico that have now been announced.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz earlier this month urged the EU to settle the tariff dispute with the US as quickly as possible to protect core industries like cars, steel and pharmaceuticals.

German car companies have been shipping more vehicles to the US over the past months in an attempt to get ahead of any tariffs.

Trump had threatened to impose 50% tariffs if the EU failed to clinch a deal by July 9, a deadline that then got pushed back to August. But now he has announced new tariffs of 30% starting August 1.
