Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Shahin said any future Palestinian state will be pluralistic, with respect for any deal on a two-state solution for Israel and adherence to international law. She said the Palestinian Authority is on a path to root out corruption, which she admitted "takes time".

If a Palestinian state emerges, it will be a pluralistic state, with a place for women, and adherence to international law, including the security of Israel, the Palestinian foreign minister has claimed in an exclusive interview with Euronews.

”It would be a pluralistic society. There will be a place for women. I’m a woman, and I’m Minister of Foreign Affairs, and I am Christian, and from Armenian origins,” said Varsen Aghabekian-Shaheen.

She said it would be a place where there is respect for “international law” and respect for “any agreement signed by Palestine with its neighbours”.

Meanwhile she criticised EU inaction over Israel’s war in Gaza and violence in the West Bank as “shocking and disappointing”.

The “whole world is watching children brutally murdered while awaiting medical care in tents, and people being killed while queuing for basic food supplies”, said Aghabekian-Shahin.

“We see children brutally murdered while in tents while awaiting medical care from another tent,” the foreign minister claimed.

The war in Gaza started in response to the Hamas terror attack on October 7th.

Aghabekian-Shahin believes there is still hope for a contiguous, Palestinian state, with the Palestinian Authority (PA) in control of both Gaza and the West Bank.

Corruption within the Palestinian Authority acknowledged

The PA’s first female foreign minister said years of corruption within the PA, and also the Palestinian Liberation Authority (PLA) – the national coalition which is the legally recognised representative of the Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza – is in the process of being rooted out.

And there is also the question of credibility and influence.  While some Palestinians continue to support Hamas, demonstrations against Hamas continue apace, and confidence in the performance of the Palestinian Authority is declining, according to the Palestinian Policy and Survey research centre

“It’s not an excuse, but corruption is everywhere. And remember, we are under occupation, and occupation corrupts,” said Aghabekian-Shahin.

”Funding from outside corrupts, not being able to direct your organisations the way you want corrupts,” she said.

”That is not an excuse. But today we have a reform and development agenda by this government in Palestine. And we’re working on all aspects to curtail corruption, to decrease nepotism, to ensure that our organisations are governed by rules and regulations applicable to all,” she said, adding: “This takes time.”

The realisation of a Palestinian state is as remote a possibility as ever given the violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as well as sustained violence against, and expulsion of Palestinians in the West Bank.

In addition, US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has indicated his country no longer supports the internationally agreed-upon two-state solution, and believes Israel is entitled to formally occupy the lands in the West Bank due to its historical, biblical links.

Citește mai multe știri pe top10stiri.ro

Huckabee said any potential Palestinian state could be forged out of an existing Muslim country rather than the lands designated by several UN resolutions for a future Palestinian state – namely, the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.

Neighboring Arab countries have however indicated they would not take in millions of Palestinians and continue to advocate for a two-state solution. Jordan, Lebanon and to a lesser extent, Egypt and Syria, are already home to large populations of Palestinians refugees from the 1948 and 1967 wars with Israel.

“We keep the hope alive because we are two-staters and we believe that that two-state solution is the only viable solution,” she told Euronews.

Minister Aghabekian -hahin believes a Palestinian state will materialise, and Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia will be crucial in pushing for it.

She said Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries will pause plans to normalise relations with Israel unless the Jewish State negotiates a state for Palestinians.

Saudi Arabia was close to formally normalising relations with Israel days before Hamas terrorist attack on October 7th.

“When President Trump said about his intention to create the Riviera, there was very quick response from all Arab states, individually and collectively, on the no displacement issue of Palestinians,” she said.

Last February, in a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, US President Donald Trump said he would “take over” and “own” Gaza, and turn it into “the Riviera of the Middle East”.

Saudi Arabia and France are co-chairing an international conference on a two-state solution in New York on the 28 and 29 of July at ministerial level.

Israelul salută decizia UE de a nu impune sancțiuni în Gaza, în timp ce palestinienii sunt „șocați”

The EU’s 27 foreign ministers decided at a meeting in Brussels earlier this week not to “punish” Israel for its actions in Gaza and to “keep a close watch” on the country’s implementation of a recent agreement to improve the flow of aid in the strip.

The EU’s recent decision not to act on Israel’s war in Gaza is a “diplomatic feat”, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said in reaction, while his Palestinian counterpart, Varsen Aghabekian-Shahin, described it as “shocking and disappointing”.

On Tuesday, the 27 EU foreign ministers agreed to delay taking any action against Israel after examining an exhaustive list of 10 options to respond to Israel’s breach of the EU-Israel Association Agreement over its failure to respect Palestinian human rights.

The EU’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas said the EU would keep the options, which included the suspension of visa-free travel and the blocking of imports from the Jewish settlements “on the table” and “stand ready to act if Israel does not live up to its pledges”.

Following the meeting, Sa’ar wrote on X that his country had achieved “an important diplomatic feat by managing to push back the obsessive attempts by several European Union countries to impose sanctions on Israel”.

“The mere attempt to impose sanctions on a democratic state that is defending itself against attempts to destroy it is outrageous,” Sa’ar wrote. “I thank our friends in the European Union and their foreign ministers, who supported us and prevented an attack on Israel that would also have been an attack on the European Union itself.”

By contrast, Aghabekian Shahin expressed disappointment and anger at the EU’s inability to sanction a country it had earlier condemned. In May, the EU ordered a review of the EU-Israel Association Agreement which later found “indications” that Israel breached its human rights obligations with actions in Gaza, by for example applying stringent conditions to the deliveries of humanitarian aid.

“It’s shocking and disappointing, because everything is crystal clear. I mean, there’s a new EU report that clearly stated that Israel has been violating … 38 violations were indicated in that report. And it’s an EU report,” Aghabekian Shahin told Euronews in an exclusive interview. “These violations have been unfolding in front of everybody’s eyes. The whole world has been seeing what is happening in Gaza. The killing, the atrocities, the war crimes,” Aghabekian Shahin added.

The two also provided different responses to a recent deal struck by the EU with Israel to substantially increase the number of trucks of humanitarian aid including medical food items into Gaza. Sa’ar said his country had complied with the agreement while Aghabekian-Shahin insisted that since the agreement was made, “we see more killings of people”.

Earlier this week, the two ministers were in the same meeting as part of the EU-Southern Neighbourhood ministerial gathering in Brussels which is aimed at deepening the EU’s cooperation with Israel as well as nine other southern partners including Syria and Libya.

Sa’ar said the two didn’t talk to each other, as the Palestinian Authority “still sponsors terrorism, makes payments for terrorists and terrorist families”, he said.

It was the first time both sides were represented at high level in Brussels since Hamas October 7th terror attacks and the subsequent Israeli military action in Gaza.

Wellcome Photography Prize 2025: When photography meets science, health and the human experience

    By&nbspDavid Mouriquand

Now in its 28th year, the Wellcome Photography Prize honours photography at the intersection of science, health and the human experience. This year’s winners capture powerful stories exploring domestic abuse, climate migration and the hidden dangers of cholesterol.

The Wellcome Photography Prize, which offers image-makers a platform to showcase the impact of science and health on lives around the world, has unveiled this year’s winners.

2025’s laureates are UK-based artist Sujata Setia; Bangladeshi documentary and street photographer Mithail Afrige Chowdhury; and UK-based electron microscopy specialist and science photographer Steve Gschmeissner.

Their works capture powerful stories exploring domestic abuse, climate migration and the hidden dangers of cholesterol.

Each awarded a £10,000 prize at a ceremony held at the Francis Crick Institute in London.

    Check out their winning images:

A Thousand Cuts by Sujata Setia (Storytelling Series)

Sujata Setia was recognised for A Thousand Cuts, a portrait project developed with survivors of domestic abuse within South Asian communities.

“Each image is a composite of personal testimony, visual symbolism, and traditional craft. Setia worked with the women and with the charity SHEWISE to create portraits that protected anonymity without erasing identity, applying the Indian paper-cutting technique sanjhi to overlay each photograph.”

Check out Euronews Culture’s video on the A Thousand Cuts project.

About the win, Sujata Setia said: “This is a monumental recognition. A Thousand Cuts being selected for Wellcome Photography Prize affirms that health cannot be separated from the histories that shape it. And that domestic abuse is never a singular event; it leaves a direct, trans-generational imprint on health.”

“As a child who grew up in a home where violence was a daily occurrence, I carry that trauma like another limb,” she added. “This recognition validates not just my story, but the invisible, intangible, yet deeply scarring legacy of gender-based abuse.”

“Domestic abuse is one of the most widespread global crimes; and yet remains among the least publicly acknowledged health crises. I hope this moment becomes a catalyst for deeper dialogue and scholarship around the interrelation between domestic abuse and health. That is our collective hope.”

Urban Travel by Mithail Afrige Chowdhury (Striking Solo Photography)

“A deceptively gentle image of a mother and daughter on a rooftop picnic in Dhaka. With few parks left in the city due to rapid urbanisation, this staged moment, a simple attempt to give a child a taste of nature, becomes an act of resilience.”

“Nearly half of Dhaka’s population today are climate migrants, displaced by increasingly extreme weather, and Chowdhury’s work highlights the everyday consequences of these shifts: the loss of green space, of childhood rituals, of breath.”

About the win, Mithail Afrige Chowdhury said: “When I got the news, the first thing I did was charge my camera— not to take a photo, but to restart something I thought I’d lost. I won’t dwell on personal or professional hardships, but this moment means more than I can say.”

Chowdhury added: “I made this image two years ago, as part of a major project on climate change, urban sustainability, and public health. Then life intervened, and fear slowly pulled me away from the work I loved. But now, I can wake up with an objective. Because someone has my back. And that makes all the difference. Awards can feel technical but this recognition from Wellcome feels deeply human.”

Cholesterol in the Liver by Steve Gschmeissner (The Marvels of Scientific and Medical Imaging)

Steve Gschmeissner’s electron microscopy image Cholesterol in the Liver reveals cholesterol crystals (shown in blue) forming inside lipid-laden liver cells (purple).

“These microscopic shifts, invisible to the naked eye, can have deadly consequences: when cholesterol hardens from liquid to crystal, it damages blood vessels and contributes to heart disease and strokes. Gschmeissner’s colourised SEM image transforms this biological process into something visually striking, part data, part artwork. With a career spanning over four decades, and more than 10,000 images published in scientific journals, stamp collections, fashion collaborations, and music albums, his work exemplifies how imaging can bridge science and culture.”

About the win, Steve Gschmeissner said: “When I discovered that Wellcome had reintroduced the Marvels of Scientific and Medical Imaging category, I was delighted to enter such a prestigious competition. I was thrilled to be shortlisted, and winning first prize is undoubtedly one of the highlights of my 50-year career of trying to bring the wonders of the microscopic world to all.”

You can find the full list of the finalists for the Storytelling, Striking Solo Photography and The Marvels of Scientific and Medical Imaging here.

Wellcome supports discovery research into life, health and wellbeing, and take on three worldwide health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

The top 25 entries are on display in the Wellcome Photography Prize 2025 exhibition, which is free and open to the public at the Francis Crick Institute, London, running from 17 July to 18 October 2025.
