Franța: Un incendiu major de vegetație din apropierea orașului Marsilia închide aeroportul

Zeci de pompieri au fost desfășurați la periferia orașului portuar din sudul Franței pentru a împiedica incendiile să ajungă la locuințe. Călătoriile aeriene și feroviare au fost perturbate, iar locuitorii sunt sfătuiți să rămână în case.

Un incendiu de vegetație care se extinde rapid la periferia Marsiliei a forțat aeroportul orașului să își oprească activitatea marți după-amiază.

Avioanele nu au mai decolat sau aterizat de în jurul prânzului, iar unele zboruri au fost deviate către Nisa sau alte aeroporturi regionale, potrivit unui purtător de cuvânt al aeroportului din Marsilia.

Serviciul local de pompieri a declarat că 168 de pompieri au fost desfășurați pentru a stinge un incendiu de vegetație provocat de vânt care ardea 350 de hectare (860 de acri) în apropierea orașuluiLes Pennes-Mirabeau, situat la nord-vest de Marsilia.

„În această etapă, populațiile trebuie să rămână limitate la zonele rezidențiale”, a declarat Regiunea Provence-Alpes-Coasta de Azur a postat pe X.

„Închideți obloanele, ușile, păstrați-vă proprietatea liberă pentru serviciile de urgență și nu călătoriți pe drumuri”, a adăugat acesta.

Municipalitatea Marsiliei a postat, de asemenea, pe X, cerând oamenilor să „evite toate activitățile în aer liber” și să urmeze instrucțiunile și mesajele de alertă.

Primarul Marsiliei, Benoit Payan, a avertizat locuitorii pe X că incendiul este acum „la porțile Marsiliei”, îndemnându-i pe locuitorii din nordul orașului să evite călătoriile pe drumuri pentru a elibera calea serviciilor de salvare.

Între timp, un incendiu de vegetație care a izbucnit luni în apropierea orașului de coastă Narbonne, situat în sud-vestul țării, a distrus aproximativ 2.000 de hectare de teren și continuă să ardă în zonă.

Incendii puternice în nord-estul Spaniei, Grecia

Mai multe țări europene au fost în alertă maximă pentru căldură extremă și incendii de vegetație în lunile mai și iunie, deoarece un val de căldură de la începutul verii a doborât recorduri și a împins temperaturile de peste 104 grade Fahrenheit (40 de grade Celsius) în țări precum Spania și Grecia.

Incendiile de vegetație făceau încă ravagii în nord-estul Spaniei marți seara, în timp ce incendiile de vegetație din cea mai mare insulă a Greciei, Creta, a forțat evacuarea a peste 1.500 de persoane din case și hoteluri săptămâna trecută.

Trump to meet Netanyahu again to push for Gaza deal

US President Donald Trump says he will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu again on Tuesday to push for a Gaza agreement, just a day after the two leaders had dinner at the White House.

“He’s coming over later. We’re going to be talking about, I would say, almost exclusively Gaza. We’ve got to get that solved,” Trump told reporters at a cabinet meeting. 

“It’s a tragedy, and he wants to get it solved, and I want to get it solved, and I think the other side wants to.”

Meanwhile, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff said he was hopeful for a deal between Israel and Hamas, who are holding indirect talks in Qatar. He said he hopes for an agreement by the end of the week that would secure a 60-day ceasefire and the release of 10 live hostages and nine deceased.

Netanyahu is in Washington until Thursday on his third visit since Trump returned to power in January. On Tuesday, he was also due to meet Vice President JD Vance, House Speaker Mike Johnson and senators on Capitol Hill.

Israeli defense minister proposes Rafah facility for displaced Palestinians

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced plans to contain hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in what he called a “humanitarian city” in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah.

Israeli strikes have largely destroyed Rafah, home to Gaza’s only border crossing with Egypt.

The plan would initially house some 600,000 Palestinians currently living in tents in the nearby Mawasi area but could be expanded to contain the enter population of the Gaza Strip

Katz said the area would be administered by unspecified “international partners,” with the Israeli military only providing security.

People entering the camp would undergo a security check to prevent Hamas militants from entering the area, he said.

Katz also said the proposed camp would assist Palestinian residents to “voluntarily emigrate” out of Gaza — a move which critics say would amount to forced expulsion.

The Times of Israel newspaper noted that while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said it is not his plan to expel Palestinians against their will, his government is nevertheless beholden to some far-right coalition partners who have previously discussed the idea of forcibly expelling Palestinians from Gaza to make way for new Jewish settlements.

EU reports 3 mariners killed in Houthi attack on Red Sea vessel

Three mariners were killed in an attack on a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier in the Red Sea carried out by Yemen-based Houthi rebels, according to a EU naval force operating in the region.

The attack on the Greek-owned vessel “Eternity C” took place on Monday evening in an attack that involved drones and speedboats. 

It comes a day after another ship, the Magic Seas, was attacked on Sunday. That vessel ended up sinking on Monday, but the crew was able to abandon ship.

The two attacks are the first by Houthis on Red Sea shipping since November 2024. Although the Iran-backed Houthis have not claimed the second attack, the US Embassy in Yemen accused the militant group of being behind the attack on the Eternity C and said they were “once again showing a blatant disregard for human life.”

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the vessel was repeatedly attacked and had been badly damaged.

“The vessel has sustained significant damage and has lost all propulsion,” UKMTO, which is run by the British navy, said in a statement.

The US Embassy in Yemen accused the Iran-backed Houthis said they were “once again showing a blatant disregard for human life.”

The EU said the attacks on Red Sea shipping were “a serious escalation endangering maritime security in a vital waterway for the region and the world”

The Houthis have been launching missile and drone attacks against commercial and military ships in the region in what the group’s leadership has described as an effort to end Israel’s offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Houthis had paused attacks until the US launched an assault against the group in mid-March.

The US operation ended after a few weeks, and the Houthis hadn’t attacked a vessel until this weekend.

Five Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza attack

Israel’s military said that five of its soldiers were killed in Gaza during combat operations overnight into Tuesday. 

“All of Israel bows its head and mourns the fall of our heroic soldiers, who risked their lives in the battle to defeat Hamas and free all our hostages,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted on X.

The military said 14 other soldiers were injured, one seriously.

Israeli military correspondents reported that the deaths took place when improvised explosive devices detonated in the area of Beit Hanun in the north of the territory.

The Times of Israel newspaper reports that the death toll for Israel’s military as a result of the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza now stands at 449 dead.

Who is eligible for the Nobel Peace Prize? And who can nominate?

Anyone or any organization can be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, but only a select group of people can actually make a nomination.

As a member of a national parliament, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is eligible to nominate US President Donald Trump for the prize.

This privilege also extends to cabinet members and heads of state.

Other categories listed in the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s criteria include, among others, university professors, members of certain international courts, directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes, past Nobel laureates, and current and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

The Norwegian Nobel Institute has so far registered a total of 338 candidates for the 2025 peace prize. Of them, 244 are individuals and 94 are organizations.

The names of the nominations and the nominators for a given year are not divulged until 50 years after the prize has been awarded. However, some high-profile cases tend to attract media attention — such as the several times Trump has been nominated over the years.

The Palestine Red Crescent said Al-Zaytoun Medical Clinic in Gaza city was forced to close amidIsraeli shelling in the Gaza Strip.

“The clinic had been providing care to thousands of patients, particularly as the area became increasingly overcrowded with displaced residents from eastern Gaza following evacuation orders issued by the Israeli occupation,” the Red Crescent said.

“With the clinic’s closure, thousands of civilians will now be forced to walk long distances to access medical care or obtain childhood vaccinations.”

Israeli military actions or evacuation orders have forced 18 Palestine Red Crescent medical clinics to close since the beginning of the assault on Gaza, the group said.

Netanyahu nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize, hails attacks on Iran

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Donald Trump on Monday that he was nominating the US president for a Nobel Peace Prize as the pair hailed their recent strikes on Iran’s key nuclear facilities.

Netanyahu and Trump sat down with their top aides for a dinner in Washington to mark the Iran operation and discuss a 60-day ceasefire proposal aimed at halting the 21-month conflict in Gaza.

“He’s forging peace as we speak, and one country and one region after the other,” Netanyahu said as he presented Trump with a nominating letter, adding that he is sending it to the Nobel Peace Prize committee.

The development comes after Trump ordered US forces to drop “bunker-buster” bombs and fire a barrage of Tomahawk missiles on three nuclear sites in Iran.

In an interview published on Monday, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said the US airstrikes so badly damaged nuclear facilities that Iranian authorities have not been able to access them.

Netanyahu’s outwardly triumphant visit to the White House, his third this year, is dogged by Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza and questions over how hard Trump will push for an end to the conflict.

But in an exchange before the dinner got underway, both Trump and Netanyahu expressed optimism that their success in Iran would mark a new era in the Middle East.

“I think things are going to be really settled down a lot in the Middle East,” Trump said. “And, they respect us and they respect Israel.”

Negotiations had started in April but were scuttled after Israel began its operations last month.

“We have scheduled Iran talks, and they want to,” Trump told reporters. “They want to talk.” He said last week that the talks would restart soon.

Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, sitting at the table with Trump, said the meeting would be soon, perhaps in a week, but Iran has yet to confirm the arrangement.

Donald Trump said late on Monday that Hamas is keen on having a ceasefire with Israel amid the ongoing Gaza conflict.

“They [Hamas] want to meet and they want to have that ceasefire,” Trump said at the start of a White House dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said there was an opportunity to reach an agreement quickly.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said that Witkoff “intends to travel to Doha later this week” to participate in the mediation talks.

Leavitt heaped praise on Qatar and Egypt for being “incredibly helpful partners in mediating these negotiations and discussions to bring peace to this region and end this conflict once and for all.”

Șapte goluri pentru Germania, cea mai importantă victorie în semifinala Cupei Mondiale din istorie, cele mai multe goluri primite vreodată de Brazilia, cele mai rapide patru goluri din istoria Cupei Mondiale, cea mai rapidă dublă din istoria Cupei Mondiale (69 de secunde).

Lista statisticilor și recordurilor care au însoțit victoria istorică a Germaniei asupra Braziliei a continuat la nesfârșit. Într-o semifinală de vis între două dintre cele mai mari națiuni ale fotbalului, gazdele au fost umilite de o echipă destinată să câștige totul.

Germania a intrat în această semifinală de vis după ce a câștigat trei meciuri consecutive la o diferență de un gol. Învinsese Algeria în prelungiri și, stimulată de faimosul interviu de după meci al lui Per Mertesacker, învinsese Franța într-un sfert de finală strâns. O lovitură de cap strălucită a lui Mats Hummels și un remarcabil Manuel Neuer au fost suficiente.

Brazilia, o națiune de fotbal gălăgioasă și mândră, își croise drum în semifinale, având nevoie de penalty-uri pentru a învinge Chile și de o abordare mai fizică pentru a învinge Columbia. Dar visul Braziliei la Cupa Mondială nu era pe cale să se piardă. Germania l-a îngropat atât de adânc încât a-l găsi din nou însemna o amintire dureroasă, traumatizantă.

Patru în șase minute

Primul a fost Thomas Müller, care a intrat și a marcat o lovitură de cap nemarcată. Apoi a venit Miroslav Klose, care a recuperat o lovitură și a devenit cel mai bun marcator din istoria Cupei Mondiale (16). Toni Kroos a mai marcat o lovitură, punându-și mâinile la gură, ca și cum ar fi vrut să reflecte neîncrederea pe care o simțeau milioane de fani ai Germaniei din întreaga lume. Semifinala de vis a părut dintr-o dată mai degrabă o ceață.

Presiunea națională, absența lui Neymar și o linie defensivă remarcabil de înaltă au însemnat sfârșitul pentru gazde. Antrenorul Braziliei, Luiz Felipe Scolari, a fost cu siguranță de vină pentru că a crezut că echipa sa ar putea oferi aceeași acțiune ofensivă fără Neymar, dar cei în galben din acea seară au fost jenați de bărbații în roșu și negru.

Aceasta era o echipă nemiloasă a Germaniei, nu doar destinată să câștige, ci și hotărâtă să o facă. Conducând cu un singur gol, Philipp Lahm a făcut o intrare superbă în careu pentru a-l respinge pe Marcelo. Sami Khedira și Mats Hummels au fost străluciți, iar antrenorul Joachim Löw a continuat să ia decizii inteligente, în timp ce ciclul pe termen lung de dezvoltare al Germaniei a atins apogeul exact la momentul potrivit.

Finala Ligii Campionilor din 2013, complet germană, din anul precedent, demonstrase că fotbalul intern german era construit pe un sistem plin de jucători foarte buni și antrenori entuziaști. În Brazilia, împotriva Braziliei, în semifinala Cupei Mondiale, echipa națională a Germaniei a dovedit că venise momentul țării.

Victoria din finală împotriva Argentinei a fost greu de disputat, dar demolarea Braziliei a făcut ca aceasta să pară Cupa Mondială a Germaniei. Fără titlu, această umilință a Braziliei ar fi fost o notă de subsol istorică, mai degrabă decât un punct de cotitură în istoria fotbalului german.

Dar nu a fost așa și asta a însemnat, în multe privințe, că victoria cu 7-1 a fost momentul în care Germania și-a anunțat cu adevărat revenirea în vârful lumii fotbalului.

Președintele american Donald Trump l-a mustrat dur, marți, pe președintele rus Vladimir Putin, după ce a declarat că Washingtonul va trimite Ucrainei mai multe arme pentru a se apăra în contextul invaziei continue a Rusiei.

Cruising at a depth of 8,336 meters (over 27,000 feet) just above the seabed, a young snailfish has become the deepest fish ever filmed by scientists during a probe into the abyss of the northern Pacific Ocean.

Scientists from University of Western Australia and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology released footage of the snailfish on Sunday filmed last September by sea robots in deep trenches off Japan.

Along with the filming the deepest snailfish, the scientists physically caught two other specimens at 8,022 meters and set another record for the deepest catch.

Previously, the deepest snailfish ever spotted was at 7,703 meters in 2008, while scientists had never been able to collect fish from anywhere below 8,000 meters.

“What is significant is that it shows how far a particular type of fish will descend in the ocean,” said marine biologist Alan Jamieson, founder of the Minderoo-UWA Deep Sea Research Centre, who led the expedition.

Scientists are filming in the trenches off Japan as part of a 10-year study into the deepest fish populations in the world. Snailfish are members of Liparidae family, and while most snailfish live in shallow water, others survive at some of the greatest depths ever recorded, Jamieson said.

During the two-month survey last year, three “landers” – automatic sea robots fitted with high-resolution cameras – were dropped into three trenches – the Japan, Izu-Ogasawara and Ryukyu trenches – at varying depths.

In the Izu-Ogasawara trench, footage showed the deepest snailfish hovering calmly alongside other crustaceans on the seabed.

Jamieson classified the fish as a juvenile and said younger deep sea snailfish often stay as deep as possible to avoid being eaten by bigger predators that swim at shallower depths.

Another clip shot at between 7,500 and 8,200 meters in the same trench showed a colony of fish and crustaceans munching at bait tied to an undersea robot.

Images of the two captured snailfish – identified as Pseudoliparis belyaevi – provide a rare glimpse of the unique features that help the deep sea species survive the extreme environment.

They have tiny eyes, a translucent body, and their lack of swim bladder, which helps other fish float, works to their advantage, Jamieson said.

The professor said the Pacific Ocean is particularly conducive to vibrant activity due to its warm southern current, which encourages sea creatures to go deeper, while its abundant marine life provides a good source of food for bottom feeders.

Scientists would like to know more about creatures living at extreme depths, but cost is the constraint, Jamieson said, adding that each lander alone costs them $200,000 to assemble and operate.

“The challenges are that technology has been expensive and scientists don’t have a lot of money,” he said.

Slumped on his club, head buried in his arm, Rory McIlroy looked on the verge of tears.

The then-21-year-old had just watched his ball sink into the waters of Rae’s Creek at Augusta National and with it, his dream of winning The Masters, a dream that had looked so tantalizingly close mere hours earlier.

As a four-time major winner and one of the most decorated names in the sport’s history, few players would turn down the chance to swap places with McIlroy heading into Augusta this week.

Yet on Sunday afternoon of April 10, 2011, not a golfer in the world would have wished to be in the Northern Irishman’s shoes.

Flying

A fresh-faced, mop-headed McIlroy had touched down in Georgia for the first major of the season with a reputation as the leading light of the next generation of stars.

An excellent 2010 had marked his best season since turning pro three years earlier, highlighted by a first PGA Tour win at the Quail Hollow Championship and a crucial contribution to Team Europe’s triumph at the Ryder Cup.

Yet despite a pair of impressive top-three finishes at the Open and PGA Championship respectively, a disappointing missed cut at The Masters – his first at a major – served as ominous foreshadowing.

McIlroy shot 74 and 77 to fall four strokes short of the cut line at seven-over par, a performance that concerned him enough to take a brief sabbatical from competition.

But one year on in 2011, any lingering Masters demons looked to have been exorcised as McIlroy flew round the Augusta fairways.

Having opened with a bogey-free seven-under 65 – the first time he had ever shot in the 60s at the major – McIlroy pulled ahead from Spanish first round co-leader Alvaro Quirós with a second round 69.

It sent him into the weekend holding a two-shot cushion over Australia’s Jason Day, with Tiger Woods a further stroke behind and back in the hunt for a 15th major after a surging second round 66.

And yet the 21-year-old leader looked perfectly at ease with having a target on his back. Even after a tentative start to the third round, McIlroy rallied with three birdies across the closing six holes to stretch his lead to four strokes heading into Sunday.

The youngster was out on his own ahead of a bunched chasing pack comprising Day, Ángel Cabrera, K.J. Choi and Charl Schwartzel. After 54 holes, McIlroy had shot just three bogeys.

“It’s a great position to be in … I’m finally feeling comfortable on this golf course,” McIlroy told reporters.

“I’m not getting ahead of myself, I know how leads can dwindle away very quickly. I have to go out there, not take anything for granted and go out and play as hard as I’ve played the last three days. If I can do that, hopefully things will go my way.

“We’ll see what happens tomorrow because four shots on this golf course isn’t that much.”

Falling

The truth can hurt, and McIlroy was about to prove his assessment of Augusta to be true in the most excruciating way imaginable.

His fourth bogey of the week arrived immediately. Having admitted to expecting some nerves at the first tee, McIlroy sparked a booming opening drive down the fairway, only to miss his putt from five feet.

Three consecutive pars steadied the ship, but Schwartzel had the wind in his sails. A blistering birdie, par, eagle start had seen him draw level at the summit after his third hole.

A subsequent bogey from the South African slowed his charge, as McIlroy clung onto a one-shot lead at the turn from Schwartzel, Cabrera, Choi, and a rampaging Woods, who shot five birdies and an eagle across the front nine to send Augusta into a frenzy.

Despite his dwindling advantage and the raucous Tiger-mania din ahead of him, McIlroy had responded well to another bogey at the 5th hole, draining a brilliant 20-foot putt at the 7th to restore his lead.

The fist pump that followed marked the high-water point of McIlroy’s round, as a sliding start accelerated into full-blown free-fall at the par-four 10th hole.

His tee shot went careening into a tree, ricocheting to settle between the white cabins that separate the main course from the adjacent par-three course. It offered viewers a glimpse at a part of Augusta rarely seen on broadcast, followed by pictures of McIlroy anxiously peering out from behind a tree to track his follow-up shot.

Though his initial escape was successful, yet another collision with a tree and a two-putt on the green saw a stunned McIlroy eventually tap in for a triple bogey. Having led the field one hole and seven shots earlier, he arrived at the 11th tee in seventh.

By the time his tee drive at the 13th plopped into the creek, all thoughts of who might be the recipient of the green jacket had long-since switched away from the anguished youngster. It had taken him seven putts to navigate the previous two greens, as a bogey and a double bogey dropped him to five-under – the score he had held after just 11 holes of the tournament.

Mercifully, the last five holes passed without major incident. A missed putt for birdie from five feet at the final hole summed up McIlroy’s day, though he was given a rousing reception as he left the green.

Mere minutes earlier, the same crowd had erupted as Schwartzel sunk his fourth consecutive birdie to seal his first major title. After starting the day four shots adrift of McIlroy, the South African finished 10 shots ahead of him, and two ahead of second-placed Australian duo Jason Day and Adam Scott.

McIlroy’s eight-over 80 marked the highest score of the round. Having headlined the leaderboard for most of the week, he finished tied-15th.

Bounce-back

Tears would flow during a phone call with his parents the following morning, but at his press conference, McIlroy was upbeat.

“I’m very disappointed at the minute, and I’m sure I will be for the next few days, but I’ll get over it,” he said.

“I was leading this golf tournament with nine holes to go, and I just unraveled … It’s a Sunday at a major, what it can do.

“This is my first experience at it, and hopefully the next time I’m in this position I’ll be able to handle it a little better. I didn’t handle it particularly well today obviously, but it was a character-building day … I’ll come out stronger for it.”

Once again, McIlroy would be proven right.

Just eight weeks later in June, McIlroy rampaged to an eight-shot victory at the US Open. Records tumbled in his wake at Congressional, as he shot a tournament record 16-under 268 to become the youngest major winner since Tiger Woods at The Masters in 1997.

The historic victory kickstarted a golden era for McIlroy. After coasting to another eight-shot win at the PGA Championship in 2012, McIlroy became only the third golfer since 1934 to win three majors by the age of 25 with triumph at the 2014 Open Championship.

Before the year was out, he would add his fourth major title with another PGA Championship win.

And much of it was owed to that fateful afternoon at Augusta. In an interview with the BBC in 2015, McIlroy dubbed it “the most important day” of his career.

“If I had not had the whole unravelling, if I had just made a couple of bogeys coming down the stretch and lost by one, I would not have learned as much.

“Luckily, it did not take me long to get into a position like that again when I was leading a major and I was able to get over the line quite comfortably. It was a huge learning curve for me and I needed it, and thankfully I have been able to move on to bigger and better things.

“Looking back on what happened in 2011, it doesn’t seem as bad when you have four majors on your mantelpiece.”

The missing piece

McIlroy’s contentment came with a caveat: it would be “unthinkable” if he did not win The Masters in his career.

Yet as he prepares for his 15th appearance at Augusta National this week, a green jacket remains an elusive missing item from his wardrobe.

Despite seven top-10 finishes in his past 10 Masters outings, the trophy remains the only thing separating McIlroy from joining the ranks of golf immortals to have completed golf’s career grand slam of all four majors in the modern era: Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.

A runner-up finish to Scottie Scheffler last year marked McIlroy’s best finish at Augusta, yet arguably 2011 remains the closest he has ever been to victory. A slow start in 2022 meant McIlroy had begun Sunday’s deciding round 10 shots adrift of the American, who teed off for his final hole with a five-shot lead despite McIlroy’s brilliant 64 finish.

At 33 years old, time is still on his side. Though 2022 extended his major drought to eight years, it featured arguably his best golf since that golden season in 2014.
